Sessions

This is the first time I have used sessions. On the first page I have "session_start();" and I get the following error printed on the page: "Warning: Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /var/www/html/forum/index.php:4) in /var/www/html/forum/index.php on line 40
Warning: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /var/www/html/forum/index.php:4) in /var/www/html/forum/index.php on line 40"

Can anyone help me?

session_start() needs to be at the very top of the page before any html code.
