Project woes!

I need to have a rep click a link and have that insert info into a MySQL db and also take them to another page. It is a troubleshooting walkthrough where they will click on a step and it will write that step to the database and then take them to a page with the next step of the process so that we can control and track what reps are doing before they schedule troublecalls.
There are about 200 pages and multiple ways to end up at a certain page. Any ideas on how I can acheive this?

it sounds like alot of work...but i'm guessing it's not too complicated...

i'd make a library of the common funtions (buttons, update, insert, delete, header locations)...so i could try to speed things up with some cutting and pasting...and then lots of editing...

but maybe...with a look at the bigger picture you can cut out much of the repetiton...

tangent: i've been thinking about this all morning...it's funny how we enjoy the repetition of getting our coffee at the coffeeshop every day, but we really hate the repetition of other things...

and with that...it's time for a coffee run...

What I really am needing is information on a way to make the link insert info(based on which link they click) into a MySQL DB and also link them to the page that has the next step of the troubleshooting on it. Any ideas?

Have your link point to a php page that does the SQL insert then a header() redirect....

Since your site is so vast, you may want to setup a hidden <form> on the page with hidden inputs so that you make some variables and don't have to type out 200 different insert scripts....

Hmm sounds like each of those 200 pages I'd convert into php pages. That way so I could write $PHP_SELF to a field in the mysql database, then create a link with "<a href="page105.php" target="_self">Next</a>"

or atleast insert php tags into those html pages....
something like:

$query = "INSERT INTO trackPages VALUES ('','".$PHP_SELF."')";
//submit query
//if you want to trck how they got to this page then...
$referrer = $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'];
$query = "INSERT INTO trackPages VALUES ('','".$PHP_SELF."', '".
$referrer."')";
//submit query

That would effectively insert what page they are on, and what page referred them (to conver multiple ways to get to a page) to that page in the database. Of course you'd probably have to rename your html pages to phtml and make sure your webserver supports those extensions so it will know that there is php code conatined and to parse it accordingly.
