Alerting a user when new message arrives

I've installed an open source instant messenger type system on my site and I'm looking a way to have it send an alert or have the title bar blink in the taskbar when a new message appears in the chat window. That way, if the chat window is minimized, the user will still know if they've gotten a new message. The window uses a timed javascript refresh to display messages.

Any ideas??

Well, I am 99% sure you are going to have to use some Java Script to do this. After that, you probably are going to have to look at the srouce of the Applet, or see if there are any functions which send the messages to the screen.

Without knowing your specific system, there is no definate answer.
