after 3 chars insert a "."

Hello ppl,
I'm back with a question for all yo, How can insert a point "." after 3 chars. I need this for a price which is read from a db, the price is in USD and after that I convert it in to my curency (lei) i have a number like this 1230934 and I want to make it like this 1.230.934 'cause is easer to read.
I think I willneed something to read the price string from right to left and count, after 3 chars insert a "." -- but I don't know how to do this -- I'm sure somebody can help me 🙂

www.php.net/number_format can do it for you. the last argument is the thousands separator, e.g.
echo number_format($number, 0, '', '.');
