Match Against?

Hello,

I am having trouble using match(). I though it was to be implemented something like this

...WHERE.....AND MATCH (profileTitle, profileCommentary) AGAINST ('$keywords')";

Unfortunately I don't have any success with this. I have 1 or more keywords in $keywords and I would like to return records with contain these keywords in either column profileTitle or profileCommentary.

but go to mysql.com and search there

make sure that you have declared the column you wish to search in a fulltext index

your syntax looks fairly reasonable, but would you let us know how it fails? empty recordset returned? error message?

some things to keep in mind when using fulltext searches:

you need an index over both columns. indexing each column separately is not enough.
words with less than 4 letters are ignored.
words that are contained in 50+% of records are regarded as "noise" and are ignored as well.
if all words are noise words, you will get 0 records without being able to tell if it is because 0 records contain the words or more than 50% did.

I think the indexing of the columns might be the problem.

Could you educate me as to the proper way of doing this...

Here's the thing. I already have a table with data.

So, would this work.

ALTER TABLE some_tbl
Change profileTitle FULLTEXT (profileTitle),
Change profileCommentary FULLTEXT (profileCommentary);

sql = ... WHERE...AND MATCH (profileTitle) AGAINST ('$keywords') OR MATCH(profileCommentary) AGAINST ('$keywords')";
