Turning Uppercase into Lowercase

You guys have helped me to get rid of spaces in a string. I now want all the uppercase letters to be made lowercase at the same time.

Is there any short cut to doing this?

To remove spaces I currently have : <?= str_replace(" ", "", $form['text']) ?>

$text = "This IS a TEsT.";
echo strtolower(str_replace(" ", "", $text));
?>

This should print "thisisatest."
