Create / Edit a Word document on a Linux server

I need to create or edit a .doc file for sending through e-mail. I am running on a RedHat server. Now I am getting the impression that this can only be done on a windows machine. Can somebody tell me if this is possible, and so give me some resources.

I know of the COM functions that allow you to do just that through a Win32 environment only, pretty sure it is a "no can do" on Linux though...
