insert php snippet vs echo'ing ?

I use alot of php html templates for my site. It is much easier to read the code when i seperate the code from html, and then just use php to echo out variable by inserting <?php echo $variable?> where needed, but im wondering if its more effiecient than just echoing out all the lines in php.. ? ie. echo "<a href=\"$variable\">" etc etc.. anyone know about this subject? i would be curious to find out. Thanks,

Interesting question.

Your server still has to parse the information regardless into pure html so I don't think on ordinary sites it will make much difference. However there must be some performance issue when you talk about heavy bandwidth sites. I would suggest that it is more efficient to code all in php so the server only parses once but I'm no expert on this.

from my experience on large scale or small sites, there is no noticeable difference in speed, between echoing out everything, and hopping in and out of php, that is one of the reasons why php is so nice, cuz you can do that, one of the other reasons is that people didn't like having to do that in reg. perl, so the php developers decided they would make it easier on programmers
