limit my text to 25 chars

Hello ppl,
I need again your help 🙂 .

How can I limit a string to 25 chars? If I have
$mystring = 'atext biger then 25 chars'

I wanty to make it

$mystring = 'the text but only the first 25 chars'

I don't need a word separation, if the 25th char is in the middle of a word, I don't care 🙂 that will be no problem.
