permission 755 (or 777)

I have just started learning php and downloaded som scripts to get started and would like to know what they mean by,

"Make permission 777 for this directory by chmod command" and
"Make permission 755 (or 777 ) for these files by chmod command"
any help, appreciated.

r w x for group
rwx for others

777 is world writeable, you can adjust the directory permissions in many programs such as ws_ftp, fetch. Usually the only file thaty should be modified to 777 is something like a text doument for posting data to. In the workd of CGI, files should be modified to 755 in order to execute the proper action.

also keep in mind if you have a cgi dir chmod'ed to 777 your exposing yourself or your server to security issues.
