help with replacing and editing a string

ok, here is the problem, i have a local path on the server and i need to do some changing to it ie.

c:/inetput/wwwroot/usercp/images/

what i need to do is strip the trailing slash and then grab the text up to the shash in front of it and put it in a var, so it would end up like this

c:/inetpub/wwwroot/usercp/

and the var = images

well, i went back and looked at it again and got my regexp to take off the ending slash, but i still cant figure out how to get all the text back to the next one in.

for anyone who is looking here is the code i used

$dir2 = preg_replace("/\/+\z/","",$basedir)
