need your thoughts on how to do this

I am making a small application for some friends for free, and I don't work with much data and time stuff..

Basically there is a holiday house on time share, and there are three families - each family has "rights" in turn week by week starting with Family A on the week starting friday March 28th.

They want to be able to go to the site and quickly see when the house is "theirs" and also to be able to swap weeks with the other families (no password needed - honesty system - I might make it email the three families whenever a change is made)

I want to output something like

Choose month (drop down menu)
Showing April (for example)

Friday 28th March 2003 - Thursday 3th April - FAMILY A
Friday 4th April - Thursday 10th April - Family B
Friday 12th April - Thursday 17th April - Family C
Friday 18th April - Thursday 24th April - Family A
Friday 25th April - Thursday 1st May - Family B

and so on I need to display about 3 months worth on each page, and I'll colour code it.

Should I use a database for changes and make that override specific dates ? but otherwise rely on a standard code to determine the family who has the house for that week ?
Or run the whole thing out of a database and just use a code to populate each week differently - the over engineered solution I thought of. There must be an easier way to do it!

its making my head hurt, especially this begining on a friday for each week thing. Any suggestions, links to similar applications or code that anyone can post will be ENORMOUSLY appreciated.

database would be the way to go. otherwise you would be storing info in a text file and would have to parse that file. could be lots of extra work you don't need.

And yes, you would have to use the database because you need some way of storing the info.

Seems like you would be doing just simple mysql_query 's and could use the php mail() function to email the families.

check out the time() function. That will save you time. No pun intended 🙂

Just a thougt.....

Why don't you assign each family an id of some sort, make a calendar with links on each date. The family will decide which date they want and then just click on the date they want. Make the database store the family info and id and dates. Then have the calendar show the family info so all member could see. If someone wants to switch, the just click on the family who has the date and send them and emai and post up the date they want to be on.

anyway. I think I have the code for a calendar if you want to go this route. Let me know

I would love code for a calender !
need to make it visually easy for them to use.
I guess database will be the best way, ill populate it for a few years to start with and use some kind of switch to colour the calender in for the different families weeks.
