Opening html file as text file

Does anyone know if it's possible in PHP to open an HTML file in the user's default text editor instead of the user's default browser?

No, but you can force a promt for dld/open by setting
header("Content-Disposition: attachment;");
in the header.

The idea I had in mind was to make the HTML file directly editable, but thinking about it, that probably wouldn't be possible anyway.

Actually, you can do this. what you need is webdav. http://www.webdav.org/

We use it for editing stuff at work because it lets the remote folks use their own high speed connects to get to the server instead of having to dial into our LAN.

It's the shiznit, but mozilla doesn't support it. You can use Amaya to get to it, or dream weaver has dav support built in too.
