Split String

This what i need to do

string= pn1000-12-453

i need to split this string in 3 variable
like this

pn=pn1000
pn2=12
pn3=453

after that i need to split pn3 in 3 again
like this
pn3_1=4
pn3_2=5
pn3_3=3

this should work, but i'm sure there is a better way.

$string= "pn1000-12-453";
$pieces = explode("-", $string);

// now you get
echo $pieces[0]; // echos pn1000
echo $pieces[1]; // echos 12
echo $pieces[3]; // echos 453

// that is as far as i can help you with.
// i cant find a way to split an array. ($pieces[3])
// the only thing i can think of is loop using foreach() and split
// but not sure what 'character' to use for that split.

If you input type is static ... i.e. they all follow the form "pn1000-12-453", it would be something like this:

$var = "pn1000-12-453";
$arry = split("-", $var);

$pn=$arry[0];
$pn2=$arry[1];
$pn3=$arry[2];

$pn3_1=$arry[2]{0};
$pn3_2=$arry[2]{1};
$pn3_3=$arry[2]{2};

I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but this is at a glance
