Special characters

Could anyone supply me with a script that removes all "special characters" such as é. etc..
I'd like -_=+/.,<>;:'@#~[{]})(*&^%$£"!|? removed too =P

Basically I want it to LEAVE:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz (Lower and Upper Case)
0123456789
and spaces in the variable $nick

If you could do this for me, I'd very much appreciate it, thank you in advance

You should play around with this:

foreach ($_POST as $key => $val)
 {
   $val = preg_replace("(\r\n|\n|\r)", "#", $val); 
   $val = preg_replace("/[^0-9a-z -#]/i",'', $val); // strip anything we don't want
   $val = str_replace("#", "*", $val); // * Put a p or br here. 
   $_POST[$key] = $val;
 }
