I have a table with a auto_incremented row. When I delete items from the table, is it possible to reset the auto_increment
so the row is in sequence again.

(example....

2
3
instead of
1
2
4
after the third item is deleted)

Actually, csn is correct.

The purpose of the autoincrement field is to provide a unique identifier, over the lifetime of the dataset, to other tables. Changing this number may result in the unexpected consequence that dependent rows in child tables will now point at the wrong records. In the words of csn:

csn is dead on - autoincrement is used for uniqueness.

I have no problem with changing the numbers in an autoincrement field if you decided from the beginning that's how that table would work (for instance, a nightly process that clears a table and reinserts all the data would be a good choice for setting the auto-increment value back to 1)

It's just that the way he worded his question, it was obvious he wanted the sequence to be pretty, not for some functional reason. If you don't have a good reason for changing an auto-inc then don't.

However, it was rather impolite to call csn a moron when he was basically right, if a bit short.

You could have referred to him as brusque, rude, short (in response length, not in status) or non-responsive, but a moron wasn't the right thing.

Let's face it, you were both trying to help the guy asking the question, and that's why we're all here. There's just no reason we can't be civil about it.

I don't think we have actually helped this guy out yet, and many hundreds out there, whom I presume uses Auto_Increment as a way of "beautifying" their database.

Perhaps some kind soul out there can help them, and me out here.

Reading through the mysql documents I couldn't find anything that can help the user in "resetting" the auto_increment indexes to the proper increment form.

Anyone has got a efficient function or something, for extracting mass data from the database, maintaining their database structure, and reinputting them in to the database after resetting auto_increment so that they will have proper "pretty" indexes?

I have the same problem - 'Mysql lowest number start". All I want is that it is easier to find records and browse through them I have the current page setup attached. Please take a look and see if youcan find a way of solving my problem.
