postgres+php on win98, system halts occasionally

Was just curious if it is "normal" for windows to halt occassionally when running postgres under cygwin under win98 and pws with php installed.

This happens when I'm not having any active connections to the db. I've just started the postmaster.

When I do load a php script that contains a pg_connect call it seems windows halt for some seconds (can't move mouse) before continuing with its existence. Rather annoying after a while...

is this due to the fact running postgres this way is slow or might it be something else?

Well considering what's "normal" on windows 98 is unacceptable on other OSs (you should upgrade!)...

Sounds like it might be paging - ie, not enough RAM. I have a W2K box running PG with cygwin and it performs fine - though occassionally there are page swaps when memory is scarce.

And, by the way, win98 isn't really a good choice for running databases, it is too unreliable. If you're gonna stick to windows, you should really upgrade to 2k or xp.

But I find Linux much easier to deal with for PHP and Postgresql both.
