Variable within a variable

Hi all,
How do i place a variable into another variable?

For example, if i have a variable called $category_1, i want to dynamically make $category_$num ($num would be equal to 1)

Any ideas?

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to the problem but wouldn't an array do what you want?

think you're after a variable variable:

for($i=1;$i<=3;$i++)
{
    $variable = "var".$i;
    echo $$variable;
}

assuming you want to join one variable name to another try this

$num = 1;

${catagory_ . $num} = "something";

this would make a variable called $catagory_1 with the value of "something"

of course if you wanted many varialbe eg 5 do what jpmoriarty said with one small variation

for($i=1;$i<=5;$i++) {
   ${catagory_ . $i} = "This is catagory $i";
   }
