what does :
Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in ...
mean? Is it that the database is not up and running properly

ps. do you recomend me to let the system adm. to fix it, or is it easy to fix for a "average" linux user.
have root priv.
Is it your local machine or what??
It is easy to do if you have installed from the RedHat CDs or from the RedHat rpms. You just need to install the appropriate php-mysql.rpm which is on the installation CDs and it is also available for download from the RedHat downloads site.
This rpm installs the client libraries used by php to connect to mysql.
