using basic href generates spacer

hello -
i know absolutly nothing about php --

i created a .php and played around with includes -=- found some stuff - worked great --

so now just the basic html codig remains --

except that when i say --
< a href="ddd.html"><img src="x.gif"></a>

i get a weird spacer that sits in ftont of my image --

can i not use the normal href tags? -- if i take out the tags everything shifts back to normal --

i have searched this site and others - but this seems to be too basic of an issue perhaps ? -

any insite is greatly appreciated -

never heard of that before.
the only thing i notice is the space between the first < and the letter 'a'.

just condese it:
<a href="ddd.html"><img src="x.gif"></a>

other than that i dunno.

If you're doing something like this:
<?php
//code..
?>
<a href=""><img src=""></a>

Most likely the spacer is in front of the anchor (to the left) and is just a result of the return code. Most browsers treat these as spaces.

i went back through to look at everything since you had never heard of the problem - and it had nothing to do with php --
it was in my stylesheet -- BODYx link --
10 px margin --
