session_vars gone missing

Is there any particular reason why a session variable should suddenly dissapear.

I have a couple of pages that using the echo simply does not show up an value, even though clicking through subsequent pages, will give a value using the same code?

Please help, its driving me nuts

session_start() must be at the top of each page
