How much webspace

I am writing a software system using PHP/MySQL and it will reside on a webserver for people to access from all over the country.

I need to work out how much webspace I will need, but have no idea how to work it out. I would imagine that the quantity of data stored is similar to this forum, so can anyone give me an approximate figure ? Or can someone suggest how to calculate it ?

it all depends on what you have/want. if i remember correctly, the base size of this board when downloaded is a few megs (maybe 4?). but server space is so cheap now, that almost every place you go, you'll have a minimum of probablly 50MB and some give you all the way up to 500MB for a fairly cheap price.

You should consider the space you will need on MySQL or whatever database you need.

Most of the hosts (including my company) take this into account too.

You should be able to geass how much space a single record uses in your database and how many rows will be added to it in a month. If it is a forum then it will be hard to calculate as record sizes are not constant (messages have different lengths).

By the way if this will be a new site it is impossible to guess how many page views and visitors you will have.

My project is not for a website as such. The software I am developing will be available only to those who pay a subscription fee. They will have facility to add data and amend data that relates to themselves. So once I know roughly how much space one subscription takes up, I can calculate approximately how much I need for 50 or 5000 subscribers. Is it that simple ?

I have 20Mb of free hosting, but I didn't think that would be enough. I can't believe that this forum software and the data totals less than 4Mb, or have I misread ?

I have found hosts with upwards of 200Mb that charge less than $10 per month. Should I expect poor server speeds, or are these prices normal ?

Only software of forums may be arround 4M. I am pretty sure that data is more than 500M here.

200M for $10/month is a little cheap and you should not expect good and reliable service (fast, good uptime. We ourselves give 50M for this amount of money and we are not very expensive yet.)

You should go with a provider which has a very good reputation and background because you are going to give service to other businesses.

I am not going to suggest my own company but I can suggest two good hosts (venturesonline.com and remarkablehosting). These two have an uptime near to 100% along with good support. (but you do your search arround them).
