strtotime with past dates

I'm having strange results with a form I created. The script takes the user input, and passes it through strtotime to get the time stamp.

If the date is in the future, it works fine. However if the date is in the past, and in standard date format (mm-dd-yyyy), it chooses a date 17 years in the future. However, it handles textual expressions fine, as well as dates in incremental format (dd-mm-yyyy).

IE: if you enter 12-31-2002, it gives you 12-22-2019.

if you enter 2002-12-31, then it gives you the expected 12-31-2002.

Any thoughts?

There is a comment about this issue under the function definition at http://www.php.net lookup the function and about 10 comments down it says something like...

"This function will not parse US data format of m-d-y with '-' instead use '/'"

Something like that anyways...
