Search word in text and hightlight it

Hello

I use mysql and i want to search a word in texts and hightlight each time I found it

for example the texts are :
"Hello, my firstname is bob and my lastname is mylan"
"My cat is white"
"I like cars"

the search word is :
"my"

when the user click on the word "my", I want to search in mysql table all the text containing the word "my" and diplay the result like that

Text1
"Hello, my firstname is bob and my lastname is mylan"

Text2
"My cat is white"

Is it possible with php or not?
Can somebody help me with this?

okay, I think you don't have trouble selecting the entries form the database, but with highlighting keywords, is that right?

so, from your example it seems you want to highlight only the exact word, and case-insensitive? then you'd probably need regular expression, like:

$str = preg_replace("/\b$keyword\b/i", "<b>$0</b>", $str);

(\b = word boundary)

no, you can simply remove the 'i' then, there is nothing that would require the s modifier.

well, there is THE manual of course.

there are some tutorials as well (not to many especially about the PHP's perl compatible regular expressions though), you might want to check this one, it covers the basics as well as some special features needed for certain tasks.

my seconde question was how to display the result in another window ?
My word list is in an xx.html page and when the user click a word, I want to call a fonction in an result.php page, with the word in parameter to do :
- connect mysql to get all the text containing the word
- for each text highlight the word
- display all the text like

what is the step you actually have problems with?

opening a link in a new window:
<a href="result.php?word=my" target="_blank">my</a>

then the result.php script would access the chosen word with $_GET['word'], build the query, and highlight the result with a regular expression.

and my sql select must return me

so my select must be like
SELECT TEXT FROM TABLE WHERE TEXT LIKE ............

no need for regexp here.

using the BINARY operator should be much more efficient I think.
should be something like this
SELECT text FROM table WHERE BINARY text LIKE '%my%'
