Installing new version of PHP

I have version 4.04 that came with Abria Merlin, which I found out is outdated. I would like to install a newer version. Upgrades to my old version do not appear to be available. Do I just install the new version over the old or do I have to remove files and/or make other adjustments first. I am very new at this, so please be clear as possible. 😕

It depends on what operating system you are on as to what you'll have to do.

If you're on Windows, just install over it.

I am on Windows XP...home edition....hope that doesn't make a difference.
