Is there any way to find out if a particular program, for example, word is already installed on client machine?

If you could do it PHP couldnt perform it as PHP does all the work Server Side regardless of whats on the other end.

You may wanna try Javascript. But even then i dont think it can detect whats installed on the clients machine

I have a file which opens with a particular program. When user clicks on the link for that file, I want to check if the associated program is there or not. If it is not there then I want to install the program first and then open the file. Is there any way to achieve it in php?

Just put a link on the page so if the user decides to install the program, he/she will install it. For example, what if I wanted to open your Word document with another program? i.e. I don't want to use MS Word. You're going to force me to install Word? Heck no! That's why you should provide a link to install the program, instead of forcing the installation (even though it's not possible anyway).
