Installation Help - Apache Dies a/f PHP install

APACHE errors out when I include the line "AddModule mod_php4.c"

I'm following along with the book "PHP Fast&Easy Web Development". It says to add the following lines to the .conf file:

LoadModule php4_module c:/php_path_here/sapi/php4apache.dll
AddModule mod_php4.c
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

And everything should work. However, I find that Apache won't run unless I use php4apache2.dll, and I leave out the mod_php4.c line. When I do that, PHPINFO runs just fine and dandy. However, phps files just show up in text (colored text for that matter).

Is the book wrong? What's going on?

Hmmm..not sure about this, but the .c module is for *nix servers, I think.

I didn't know what phps files are. I downloaded all the source files from the author's site and they're all phps files. I assumed they were simply some other format of php files, or they were in some way special telling the browser to do something different. I just didn't expect them to simply display the contents of the file.

I just wish the author would provide an email address so I could inform her of the possible addition to the errata...

So everything is working as it should?

Ah, sorry, just assumed you did 🙂

But yes, the .phps should come up much as the php does in this forum, depending on how the settings are in your php.ini.

But as long as .php shows OK, things should be along the right track.
Try to do copy this:

<?PHP
phpinfo();
?>

into a file with .php and upload it to the server, and run the script.
Does it show a info-page?

So I should look in the php.ini file to see why the phps files aren't working correctly? I was given two choices as to the php.ini file to use, there was php.ini-recommended (which I used) and then there was the php.ini-dist.

Maybe I should swap the ini files? What should I look for in the ini file to show me why the phps files are simply showing the contents.

To be more specific, I'm using Win98. The phps file comes up in apparently context-sensitive highlighting, where certain commands/keywords are in one color, and other characters are in other colors.

That's OK, then 🙂
A script saved as .phps should show itself as php-code, not execute it, and with a color-formatting.

This is how the settings look in my php.ini:
highlight.string = #DD0000
highlight.comment = #FF8000
highlight.keyword = #007700
highlight.bg = #FFFFFF
highlight.default = #0000BB
highlight.html = #000000

If you want to add filetypes to be executed as php, you can add the filetypes at the end of this:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml .php
