Split function doesn't support string pattern like dot(.)?

Hello,

It comes to me that the split() couldn't detect delimiter like dot(.). Could anybody please give me a hand?Thank you.

$part=split(".",picture1.gif");
$extension=$part[sizeof($part)-1];
print"$extension";

You should probably be using the "explode" function rather than "split".

From the manual entry on split:

"Note that if you don't require the power of regular expressions, it is faster to use explode(), which doesn't incur the overhead of the regular expression engine."

Watch out with the vocabulary you use. The word "delimiter" has another meaning in regular expressions.

But anyway, the reason the dot doesn't work is because it is a special character in regular expressions. So either escape it, or use explode() which would be better in this case because you don't need regular expressions for this problem anyway.
