Need details/direction on writing scripts with plug-in capabilities

Coding by night, I am...Ubercoder!

No...I just constantly look to do different things with my scripts and pick up new skills.

Does anyone know of a general discussion on developing for plug-ins? Before I attempt to do this on my own I rather walk a beaten trail before I get lost walking through a forest of code.

This could either be directly related to PHP or Perl or C++ or VB...I really don't mind since I can apply the principles across languages.

Anything really...that is why I said "general discussion".

I need to know what I can do before I do it.

If you need a specific...let's say I am writting a script in PHP where I want to implement "plug-ins"; the plug-in could be for anything really...shoot since I don't have any info on the subject, making up a fake need is hard...you think of one.

Say, for instance, a plugin for another PHP script? I.e. a poll or something.

I doubt you'd be able to do a plugin for another language other than PHP, though.
