Word to blob help please?

Hi All,
Got user copying and pasting into text area I then insert this into blob. Search all working OK with copy paste then search blob.
Yes you get all the format rubbish but also you get all the CV in words so

select * from table where table_field like '%$search_variable%'

works fine

But want to read into blob not copy and paste

If you read into the blob (not copy and paste) using PHP it contains '?/D*]x' so the above search process is redundant.

Can anyone offer a way of getting into blob without loosing the text? Or searching in binary?

All the binary stuff you see like that is formatting info used by word. The text content of the file is still readable/searchable if you view the total contents of the blob.

Did you get it working?

I think the problem was that you were not using the "b" attrib with the fopen(file,'rb')

No it didn't work but I appreciate the response anyway.

Blob content if copy and paste to <TEXTAREA name=content>

There must be a way.

$handle = fopen ($filename, 'rb');
$contents = fread ($handle, filesize ($filename));

Thanks for your suggestion but that didn't work.......

However your use of $FILE prompted me to RTFM, following up the precise meaning of $FILE.... I found that PHP 4.3.1 has a new function

file_get_contents ()

like file_read() but for variables

I tried loading 4.3.1 and got a security error. Once I've resolved this (over the weekend) I'll try file_get_contents() and let you know if it worked.
