I have a medium database. I need to create backup every day. How can I do it automatically?

If you have shell access you can set it up a shell script as a cron tab. This is the easiest way.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the script. I had to learn few things about shell before I could start it 🙂

Now I run it and I get this message:
Performin Backup...
./automysqlbackup: /backups/2003-03-21.Friday.sql: No such file or directory.

I get 2 more lines like that.
In the end I get the message that Daily Backup Complete!!

But nothing really happen.
Any idea?

You must follow the instructions in the script for setting-up the backup directories and referencing them.

# Backup directory location e.g /backups
BACKUPDIR=/backups

You must create these directories and set the "BACKUPDIR" in the script.

but I did it and still I get this error. Should I put this script in a special directory?

This script works perfect. But I need to connect to remote server, How can I do it?

It depends what you mean by "need to connect to remote server".

If you want to FTP the backups to a remote server you can do it by extending the script to do this quite easily. If you google for "bash FTP script" you will find plenty of examples and tutorials.

If you want to run the script on one machine to backup the databases on another machine you can simply change the connection details in the script. All you need is appropriate access permissions setup between the two machines.

Yes its make sense...

I need the second option. In the script I have this line to connect:
mysqldump -u$Username -p$Password

Now if I want to add a server it will be like this:
mysqldump -s$servername etc...
???

You need to use -

mysqldump -hhostname -uusername -ppassword
