PHP4 very slow on XP

Using PHP4 on Win XP (for local testing of web site before publishing to my ISP), I found that pages would take for ever to complete. The progress bar at the foot of the browser window was creeping very slowly forward, even though the page appeared to have loaded successfully.

This was with Abyss, or with Xitami, so I'm pretty sure its not a web server problem.

What I have done is to set XP's properties for php.exe, so that it runs in Win98/ME "compatibility mode". Now it runs fine, without any of the delay.

I'm happy with that, but is this a known problem with PHP under XP, and is there another workaround?

PHP works great with XP and 2000 in our office, but we are using Apache.

OK. Don't know Apache at all ... its too heavyweight for what I want to do. Except that I suspect that its to do with running php as a cgi rather than a module, and I dont understand the differences at all ... !

Still, as I say, I'm OK with using Win98 compatibility. All I need to do is prove that the site works before I upload it.
