probably it's right in front off me, but i'm not seeing it.
All the time this line is gving me
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/virtual/site67/fst/var/www/html/chat/inc/clearing.inc.php on line 2

I'm not sure that will actually subtract correctly, though. It might.

By using this it throws another error
You have an error in your SQL syntax near '' at line 1 in query: select id from dt_rooms where last_activity<1047596204

Do you need quotes around "last_activity"? (As you have it in the original post.)

If so, add them, but escape them. Add backslashes before them.

personally i'd do it this way:

$room = $db_table_prefix."rooms";
$time = mktime() - $user_timeout;
$query = "select id from $rooms where last_activity < $time";

i needed the prefixes to make it work before last_activity

$room = $db_table_prefix."rooms";
$time = mktime() - $user_timeout;
$query = "select id from $rooms where "last_activity" < $time";
