php utility?

I recently started using php and I was wondering what the best 'utility' for writing php is, some people have told me Macromedia Dreamweaver.. Which is the best?

I reckon EditPlus except its not like Dreamweaver..

Another vote for EditPlus under Win32 platform. VIM under *nix. There are also some decent cross-platform Java editors like 'J' or 'J-edit' that do PHP syntax highlighting and bracket matching. Please keep in mind that dreamweaver is meant to be a WYSIWYG all-in-one HTML / Web design IDE, and AFAIK does not include any special function for creating PHP scripts, other than possibly the standard syntax highlighting that any other stand-alone editor might have. You can't point dreamweaver a set of specs and have it crank out the PHP for you, in other words. You've still got to do it by hand, so you may as well use something like EditPlus (which also includes an FTP function, very handy).

Not a thing wrong with notepad, although syntax highlighting and bracket matching sure makes things alot easier...

I'd use notepad if it didn't like to insert random unicode into my writings. I have no idea why it does that, but it does it even since I've formatted and reinstalled my OS.

I use PHPedit, it's really cool, but has a few quirks, like buttons in some language I think might be Czech.

Notepads good.. Only for html.. Need that Syntax highlighting.. But EditPlus isnt really that much different to Notepad.. Only that you can open mutliple files and not open like 10 windows for it..

Syntax Highlighting and line numbered. Makes PHP a much easier job than it already is.

I use ace html which is a nice free utitlity that works fairly well

The only problem with edit plus is that it's not free. There are quite a few free editors out there like PHPEdit, or the one I use: Dev-PHP (which is open source).
