php.ini doesn't have a default SMTP server anyway... er... like... what could it be? You have to provide a SMTP server. So... just use the one you use for your email or something.

try this:

ini_set()

http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.ini-set.php

Use it to fiddle with the SMTP server from your scripts... I don't know if that's a good solution though... but it's all I can think of.
