Grabbing sessions

Hi there,
Can anybody help me with a very small problem, I've registered sessions but I can't seem to find a way of checking that the session exists on each page, e.g. a user logs on, and certain pages are restricted to the sessions.

I was trying the cookie method but it doesn't like the syntax..

Let's say that when the login occurs, you set the variable $SESSION['auth_user'] equal to the username entered at login. Then, on each page you want "protected" :

session_start();
if (!$_SESSION['auth_user']) {
   echo "You are not authorized to view this page.";
   exit;
   }
