PHP upgrade on Windows

My wife, a webmaster, is having some trouble with the IT people who have control of the web server. Cuurently they are trying to force her to develop in asp. She, of course, is trying to preserve the php environment.

Thier latest argument is out of our realm. Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to keep php up to date in a windows environment? She is being told each upgrade will require a full uninstall and reinstall of the php environment. This isn't acurate, is it?

Well I don't think it is true. But I'm still using php 4.2.3 because when I upgraded to 4.3 I had so MANY problems. It has happened before (from 4.2.1 -> 4.2.3) but it wasn't anything like the problems I had when I tried 4.3.
Btw, why the IT people want asp? asp is dying. Shouldn't they be wanting asp.net instead? asp.net is miles ahead from asp and from php. Mostly everybody that used asp before is obviously upgrading to asp.net and you see more people everyday converting from php to asp.net. If your wife plans to work in some large-scale applications asp.net is the way... it is also free and works perfectly with mysql. So if the IT guys really plan to go to asp tell your wife to convince them to go to asp.net instead

Pay no attention to the Microsoft mark, all asp is proprietary crap, I'm surprised he didn't suggest C# (known in the real world as "we couldn't continue to market J++ so we changed the name to fool people into thinking it's C"). It takes nothing to upgrade PHP. If they use the zip installation and not the msi installer (which they should do because the msi installation sucks), all they have to do is replace the php.ini file, the php installation directory and restart the webserver (I bet they are using IIS ewww). Also you might want to look at moving to a real host if at all possible, no hosting company with half a clue uses Windows boxes for webservers.

This is the wife. 🙂 Thanks for the info. I had a feeling the admin was just making excuses and that the process is not as complicated as she made it out to be. I just wanted confirmation.

I work for a college with an admin that is entirely devoted to all things MS. The admin is very adamant that PHP, which the previous admin had put on the server for me, dissapears ASAP because it is "unstable and unsupported". Believe me, if I had a hosting choice, it would not be a Windows 2000 server running ASP and Front Page Extensions!! My boss did commit me to eventually switching things to ASP, but I am taking my time doing so. ASP was the choice over ASP.NET because the admin doesn't have to do anything to the current server for ASP to function. (Installing .NET would require work!) I'll let the admin, and the administration, know what exactly is required to do the upgrade. Thanks.

Well anything in life requires work 😉. now seriously, I don't think installing asp.net would require much work.... asp and asp.net can work simultaneously without having to config anything. If you have questions about asp.net go to this site www.asp.net. It is great and they give you a very good support.

Anyway Jerdo, I knew i'd be flamed by advising asp.net in this site 🙂. I like php, most of my work is done in php, but I don't have any doubt accepting that C# is far better than php. I don't want to compare java with C# because it would be an endless debate, but comparing C# a fully OO compiled language with a script interpreted language doesn't make much sense.

I wasn't comparing C# and php. Just noting you love Microsoft and surprised you didn't bring up C# like most of the Microsoft marks, when anyone wanting C will simply use C\C++. Also in case you haven't noticed C# is J++ relabled and resold, they did this because of the outcome of a lawsuit they lost against Sun about trying to make their own Java.

Ok. you have your points there. I don't care how C# came up. All I know is that it is good. Modern, easier to use than Java/J++ and at least as powerfull. And to do some web programming you won't use C/C++(I hope). I am not a microsoft lover but I'm not a microsoft hater like you. I don't see why people don't like to admit they produce good software and easy to use. Just because they have success?

well.. i had problems when i tried to upgrade from 4.2.3 to php 4.3.

most of the sites didn't work properly and i had a bunch of errors in event viewer, so i was forced to get back to 4.2.3 which works fine 🙂
