PHP,Sockets, and mySQL

I'm working on a project where I'd like to use PHP to monitor a database for changes and then display them realtime on a page. Does anyone know of a tutorial, ideas etc. to do this? I tried to do some searches but could only come up with IRC and Usenet examples. I'm just looking for somewhere to get started. If someone could tell me if this is even feasble or recommeded, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

i don't know about realtime, but you could use a cron activated script to check it every minute. just write the script that will check for new records and then use the cron scheduler - lots of articles around the web on that. for true realtime you need to have something like java - i think with php youre restricted to updating the contents of the page to refreshing the browser.
