Settin columns to get values from other columns

Hello,
First let me say I really appreciate this community and it's amazing response time. Thank you very much. I look forward to contributing one day to help others as I have been helped.

With that being said, I have 2 small questions.

I need to set a colum field in a table that averages 2 other columns in the same column
I have a date field, that is set to Not_Null but right now it currently is set to 0000-00-00. I would rather it be CURDATE.

Any suggestions on how to do either of those routines?

Maybe the question did not make sense. Anyway, I am more concerned about making the Not_NULL entry CURDATE, the second question.

Any clues?

maybe just setting default value for your date to NOW() in your Mysql database would be enough.

do you mean "set a colum field in a table that averages 2 other columns in the same row"? otherwise I can't make sense of it.

if in each row, it would be fairly easy but introduce redundancy, so I'd rather do it in your select statement.

Truly I mangled the terminology in that post. Ultimately what I want to do is this:
I have table X with columns A, B, C
I need to have column C be the average of A and B for each row.

So A's value is 100 B's value is 10 I would need C to report 10. I have q query that will average the averages (if you will).

The table has columns for people that are duplicates

So again Bob is in the table 3 times
Col A Col C Col C
Bob 100 10 10
Bob 110 10 11

Bob 120 10 12

total 330 30 11

The totals at the bottom I took care of with 2 arrays, thanks to Bastien for a ton of help there.

Does that help. I think I have used the right terminology this time.

why not compute the average within your query ?

like this :

$query="select A,B, (A/B) as C from X"

when you fetch the result you can access the value in C as if it was a real column, but it's not in the DB for real ...
doing this prevents redundancy ...
and allow your DB to be lighter. (not by much in this case i agree)
