commenting out underscores?

this must be basic; hopefully someone knows a quick answer..

is there a way to comment out underscores? i'm trying to combine several variables into a larger name, separated by underscores:

$part1$part2$part3

i'm using this combined name on-screen and in text file exports. for the web, substituting "_" is fine, but that's an issue, obviously, in the text file.
