PHP and sendmail Optimization

I have a email list of 200+ users and I send out monthly emails. I moved my mailer from ASP to PHP and it is running dirt slow... About 2 secs per address. Compared to the ASP Script which would send the entire list under a minute. All of my other parts of PHP is optimized. If I comment out the mail() function the entire list is displayed within secs.

So how can I optimize sendmail/php?

First figure out the problem. Do you run the server? The mail logs might give you some hints...
