PHPwebsite question

I'm hopeing this is the right forum , but I'm rather new to PHP and not really sure what the problem is. If it's not will a mod please move it to the right forum , thanks.

I have the phpws uploaded to my site(it's the newest version). It supports both php and mySQL so I know that's not the problem. I go to configure it , and it says to leave the database host "localhost" if I don't know what to do with it. So I filled out the rest of the form and I got this message

"Unable to connect to your server's database.
Please reenter your settings."

did I do something wrong? all I did was upload it to my site then tried to configure it. Did I miss a step? If so what step and how would I go about doing it?

Did you set up php on this host, or is it a pay host?

If it's a pay host, what I'd suggest doing (after you double check your username and password) is contacting your host, giving them the username and password you're using along with letting them know that you put in localhost as the server and it's not letting you connect. They would be the ones to help you out if anyone.
