How can you respond to the click of a text button in php.

you mean a link? "text button" is pretty contradictory. If you mean a link, just put a query string in the url.

php is server side, so if by respond, you must mean "call a page". if you want something to happen on the page, instead of calling one, you need js.

I want to click to call a subroutine on the same page. It works with javascript, but not php.

Okay so it only works in javascript. Too bad because I can't use js.

If you don't mind reloading the page, you can do stuff with php. But php is SERVER side, not CLIENT side.
