Sorry I didnt really know where to post this...

The only web-based scripting language I code in is PHP and SQL. I was looking through the paper the other day for any local website developmet vacenceys..and every one there required usage of ASP and .NET development..i mean..wtf? I personally thought PHP was a much better structured development scripting language and far more popular than Microsoft's shity ASP?

Can some kinda put my head straight? Coz I am way confused regarding where PHP and ASP stand agains each other :/

Here in the UK asp is still the defcto standard web development scripting language

I too am finding it difficult to find a good position. Don't give up hope - keep on with it as PHP is fast becoming acceptable as a web scripting language. The reason ASP is used so much is cause it has a HUGE commercial company behind it - companies tend to believe that having this company behind it makes it a sure thing - pha!

It's the Microsoft PR machine. Many people in corporate America use ASP because it is a MS technology and that's all they know. I've only seen 2 PHP jobs in the paper in the last 8 months and I interviewed for both and got one of them. I was lucky.

I know ASP, but the ASP jobs want you to know .NET, SQL Server, And a host of other MS technologies.

Yea, its just..should I learn ASP as its an important requirement to the majority of web development firms? Personally I dont want to, it would mean learning VB which is also crap, and using shite database systems such as MS Access..thats just not 2 mention the overall crap syntax of ASP.

What im trying to ask is..would I be wasting my time learning ASP? And would you guys recommend learning it just to please others and to "expand" my knowledge? (Even though I dont wana go the Microsoft way).

How desperate do you need a job?
It's a good idea to learn other languages anyway. It expands your knowledge and even if you never use it again, at least you know it and can put it on your resume.

I hated learning ASP and here's why:

although there were some sites out there with forums and such, the information on them was not nearly as good as what I get here or in alt.php on usenet.

the syntax is so different that just doing little things took me a lot of time to debug because I was looking at it as a PHP/Perl/C++ developer. It is not like these languages at all.

It doesn't have built in encryption, I had to search out and find a free script that did it for me. And it was long in code. With php I just call md5 or crypt and that's good for me.

There are some other oddities that took me a while to work out.

Like I said though. Learn it if you have the time, just so you have tried it and can say why you don't like it.

Thanx, I see ur points. However..It requires learning other Microsoft crap IE: Visual Basic - bad programming practice.. it all comes 2gether. Im only 17! But learning ASP or not will effect my future as a web developer. It's somethin ive always wanted to do (and have done) for numerous years and I wish to expand my knowldege..but ASP takes the piss with me to be honest lol :S
