Can someone refer me to documentation about MySQL and table layout for financial information? Specifically, what column types to use.

Being financial really wouldn't be an issue. Data is data. Check the mysql manual for "column types". The spell out pretty clearly what each type is capable of.
Right, I understand the column types but I wasn't sure if there is a general rule of thumb for storing "dollar" type numbers. I would assume float or decimal but is one better than the other?
