Thumbnail creation within native php...possible?

I am producing a image upload script and in it I would LOVE to generate thumbnails...not just resized images but truely resized images so not only the pyshical dimensions of the graphic are changed but also the size...smaller to allow for faster previewing of the uploaded files.

Uploads will be in jpeg format, thumbnails will be gif.

Does PHP have a native ability to do graphic conversions like this?

If not, what to use....?

yes it does (the GD library), but i dont really see why you'd want gifs for your thumbs over jpegs. Doa search for thumbnail and gd or something on this forum, because i've posted a few times to different threads in the last 24 hours, including a complete resizing script.

Usually the answers are already out there if you can be bothered to look for them.

Saving them as gifs is easier when doing associations...

I've found that at times pre-pending the filename or post-pending it tends to cause problems when you are trying to code a template system to use basenames. Simply changing the extension is a piece of cake (for me). I know that the JPEG would be even smaller than the GIF but only by 5-10% or so.

GD based functions will only allow you to generate GIF format images IF your host is using a cracked version of GD. Which is totally illegal.
The GIF compression algorythm is under license (from Unisys if memory servs) and GD had to stop supporting it.

Why don't u try PNG format if it's just an issue of names?

This is mainly a end-user issue

I would love to use PNG hosever, PNG is only supported in the newest browsers. Since my client is unaware of the types (really the versions) of browsers that are being used, they want to make sure to cover the widest range of browser support...almost every browser on the planet supports GIF and JPEG.
