Newbie to Unix/FreeBSD

Hello. I am a complete newbie to Unix and FreeBSD. I don't even know how to partition a drive, which is why I am here. Is there a complete step-by-step guide for installing? And then for writing shell scripts? Thanks in advance. I am currently on Windows XP.

RTFM is great advice, it's very helpful...

I like to install via FTP:

Download kernel.flp and mfsroot.flp to your XP box, they're on the freebsd ftp site. Download the program 'fdimage' from the tools dir on the ftp site. Create your floppies from the cmd prompt on your XP box thusly

fdimage kernel.flp a:

etc...you'll create a 'kernel' floppy and an 'mfsroot' floppy.

Boot your box from the 'kernel.flp' ... go though kernel config in 'full-screen visual mode'... eliminate any conflicts, but note that on most modern hardware this isn't much of an issue.... The system will ask for the second disk. Insert it and you'll get the installer...note that being a volunteer project, it ain't very pretty compared to Windoze....read the screen, follow instructions, think a little... it's not too hard....

I 'spose. If you in the dir with the files, no path has to be called, so if both fdimage and kern.flp are in the root of "C":

cd \
(c:\)
fdimage kern.flp a:

I am installing FreeBSD, and am at the sysinstall part of it, and I am about to hit Standard install....

..

Okay I hit that and now it is asking me to partition. I need room to install Windows also, so how many MB should I put into FreeBSD (Windows will have my games on it, that are about 1gb each.)...and my computer has 80gb Hard Drive. After I partition what are the other steps? I am a complete newbie at partitioning and stuff. Thanks.

I'd really suggest the manual... http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/using-sysinstall.html and the pages that follow should apply in this situation. I believe the page that follows this one addresses your question exactly....

no, it doesnt, I just said I am done with the sysinstall part of the chapter, and I am hitting Standard install...I have NO clue how the hell to partition a drive, and it doesnt say....Basically I screwed my comp up 5 times now and had to format, so any help would be appreciated.
