How do I get linux to connect to the internet? Im having trouble doing this... I get a message when i try to activate my ethernet adapter that is cant be initilized or something... I have cable so I have to go through my etherenet.. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

First, is your card supported? Which model is it?

Did you install the system with the card in the computer? Also, which distro are you using?

I have a linksys model ethernet card, and I did install it before I installed linux, I use it with my windows pull out hard drive.

I have no clue what you mean by distro, if you mean grub and lilo, im using grup. Im also on red hat linux. THanks.

RedHat is the distro. lilo and grub are boot loaders.

Hmmm, have you tried googling for your card's model number?

Here's the HCL (hardware compatibility list) for Redhat. You can try looking through there. But, to be honest, you're probably going to have the best luck googling.

If you do:

ifconfig etho 192.168.0.2

what response do you get? If none, what does:

ifconfig eth0

show you?

The tulip driver is standard with Redhat.

Well Wolff, it might be something as simple as "modprobe tulip" and that might get you going. You might also want to post the output of "lspci" which will help indentify the chipset in use by your NIC, and then we can see why RedHat isn't kicking in the tulip driver to begin with 🙂

I typed in lspci, and it showed linksys LNE100 or somethign along those lines. There was asomething about rev 25, im going back into linux and getting the exact wordage....

heh amazingly enough I think I was right you need the tulip driver 🙂 so modprobe tulip at the command line should get you rockin!
