Strip All Non Alpha Numeric Tags

I tried searching for the answer to this on this board, but wasn't sucsessful. I am wondering how to take a string, and remove all non alpha numeric tags, prefrebly in one preg_replace. I can think of how to do it the long way, such as:

preg_replace('/\`|\~|\!/', '', $string);

Obviously with all non alpha numeric characters in the search field.

If someone could help me out, or possibly show me somewhere that can, it would be greatly appreciated.

$string = ereg_replace("[^[:alnum:]]", "", $string);

This will remove all non alphanumeric characters from $string
