i prefer using the UNIX/PHP-timestamp (seconds since 1.1.1970)
you get the current timestamp with time(), add 3 days from now
on would be: 3 (days) 24 (hours) 60 (min) * 60 (sec), which
you had to add to the number received by time()
if you store the new time in your mysqltable, you can easily get
the time difference each time the script is executed
